The *Best* Foods to Boost your Mood
In today's hustle culture, where stress and anxiety seem to lurk around every corner, taking care of our mental health has become more crucial than ever. While therapy and even medication are tools in managing anxiety and depression for those who require it, there is another impactful tool that many of us ignore when it comes to our metnal well-being--what we eat! Yes, our diet can be impacting our mood more than we realize!
As a mom navigating the highs and lows of family life and a mental health advocate passionate about holistic wellness, My journey has shown me firsthand how nourishing our bodies can be a game-changer for our minds. I remember when I first studied nutrition and connected it to everything I had learned in my graduate psych classes. It was a lightbulb moment—eating better wasn't just about physical health but emotional resilience, too.
In this blog post, we're going to unwrap the gifts of nature that can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. With a blend of scientific research and personal insights, I'll guide you through the best foods that have helped transform my mood over the years. It's about creating a ripple effect of wellness, one meal at a time, and I'm here to show you how!!
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Found in fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, walnuts, flax, and chia seeds, these fats are like a rejuvenating spa day for your brain. They help keep your neurotransmitters movin' and groovin', keeping inflammation at bay and ensuring your brain is in top form.
Complex Carbohydrates
Complex carbs are not just energy boosters; they're your mental health allies. Whole grains, legumes, and starchy veggies keep your blood sugar level, avoiding those mood dips. They're like that reliable friend who always keeps you balanced. Here's a family meal tip: swap in whole-grain, brown rice or quinoa pasta! PS Trader Joe’s has a great brown rice pasta!! It's a simple and delicious way to incorporate complex carbs into your diet.
Leafy Greens and Vegetables
Dark, leafy greens like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are powerhouses! Packed with folate and magnesium, they're like a cheer squad for your brain, helping you feel more uplifted and calm. I love throwing them into smoothies or making myself a small mixed green salad in the morning on the side of my breakfast—it's a quick win for my mood and energy!
Probiotic-Rich Foods
The gut-brain connection is real, folks! A happy gut means a happy mind; probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, and kimchi are your gut's besties. These foods support a healthy gut microbiome, kicking anxiety and depression to the curb. A simple go-to snack is a bowl of Greek yogurt with a sprinkle of sliced almonds, pumpkin seeds and berries!
Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds are bursting with nutrients that stabilize your mood. Keep these little guys around to snack on to help calm your nerves and brighten your day. They're perfect for on-the-go snacking or adding a crunchy twist to meals; favorites to add to are salads, avo toast, and yogurt!
